What is Stress Urinary Incontinence?
Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is a frequent problem for women that causes the involuntary loss of urine while laughing, sneezing, coughing, or physical exertion such as running or climbing stairs.
What are the causes of SUI?
The causes for this involuntary loss of urine is a weakened urethral closure mechanism and is the result the pelvic floor area changing over time. The main contributing factors are childbirth, obesity, and aging.
What are the traditional treatment options?
Until now SUI was treated non-invasively through Kegel exercises. The effectiveness of this solution relies on the daily training of this muscle. SUI is also treated invasively with a surgical implant called the Urethral Sling. This procedure requires hospitalization, recovery time and can cause severe complications.
“94% of women reported that SUI improved significantly after 120 days and 98% were completely free of SUI.” — Fotona

What is vaginal relaxation & atrophy?
Gynecologists define Vaginal relaxation Syndrome (VRS) as laxity of the vaginal wall. It can bring about a loss of sexual fulfillment for both the woman and her partner. Vaginal Atrophy pertains to the thinning of the vagina wall. This often happens post menopause and is related to dryness.
What are the reasons for vaginal relaxation & atrophy?
The most widely recognized reason for Vaginal Relaxation is overstretching of the vaginal canal through labor and worsens with each new vaginal birth. Other reasons are congenital connective tissue weakness and natural aging. Vaginal Atrophy occurs typically post menopause due to a lack of estrogen.
What are the treatment options?
Until now, women could only obtain effective results for VRS through invasive surgical treatments such as anterior and posterior vaginal plastic surgery. There are many post-operative complications associated with these procedures and a high degree of dissatisfaction with the results. The treatment options for atrophy due to menopause typically involve hormone therapy.

How does FotonaSmooth work?
The Erbium: YAG has a photothermal heating effect on collagen in both the vaginal walls and the urethra which causes restructuring and collagen regrowth. This results in a thicker and tighter vagina and urethra, which improves atrophy and prevents urine loss.
The simple 15-minute in-office procedure is highly effective, pain-free, and safe. A special attachment, similar to a speculum as used during a Pap test, is inserted into the vagina, during which the entire vaginal region is treated with short laser pulses through a small handpiece.
